As the government plans to raise the pension age to 67 next year with future talks of going even higher the chilling reality begins to set in.
Many of us might never get the chance to experience being able to retire from work and for those engaged in physically demanding jobs, the prospect of working into their late sixties, let alone seventies, is not just daunting, it’s a health hazard.
Can We Really Afford to Work So Long?
Imagine working for all of your adult life only to face a future where retirement feels more like a distant illusion.
This is more than a financial dilemma; it’s a threat to our very well-being. The increase in the pension age means that many will never have the chance to retire, potentially forcing us to work until our bodies simply can’t or don’t.
The Reality of Poverty in Old Age
As we work longer we must face the reality that poverty dramatically affects health outcomes.
Those with limited financial means often face poorer health, significantly reducing life expectancy. As we approach retirement age these financial burdens become a source of anxiety and risk, particularly for the elderly who might also be battling disability.
The stress and fear of not being able to live comfortably in retirement is palpable and deeply personal.
We should thank those that dare to challenge the status quo even if it is their job to do so whilst the government appears to become more right wing as time progresses.
Sadly the majority remain silent, overlooking the millions who will be asked to work longer for no thanks at all and no regard to their health and well being.
It’s high time we confront this issue head on, not just for ourselves but for future generations who quite correctly deserve the right to retire and have a decent quality of life.
All we want is for our government to care, to listen, and to act before it’s too late. Let’s not wait for a crisis to happen we need to demand action now.
